Description

The old vines in question here are made up of 40% Grenache, 30% Carignan, 10% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah and their ages range from 25 to over 100 years. The wine is fermented in large concreter vat and matured in foudre for fifteen months.

2011 was a cooler year than some and the wine has silky composure, fine balanced acidity and impressive length.

Wine Advocate93+/100
Downright grippy and sappy, with a resinous quality thats hard to describe, the 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes comes all from schist and limestone soils and is a blend of 50% Syrah (from 50+-year-old vines), 25% Carignan (from 125 year-old vines) and 25% Grenache (from 55-year-old vines) that spent 24 months in barrel. It offers up a spectacular bouquet of liquefied herbs, rosemary, scrub brush, pepper and dark berry fruit that continues to evolve and change over the evening. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a vibrant, energetic, yet also firm and tannic feel, it should be hidden in the cellar for another 2-3 years, and enjoyed over the following decade or more. While it lacks a touch of the density and richness found in the Muntada, its a gorgeous wine that possesses brilliant character and depth.

About this WINE

Domaine Gauby

Domaine Gauby

The modern era for this excellent Côtes du Rousillon estate dates from 1985 when the energetic Gérard Gauby took over the family estate. Previously the wines were sold in bulk to the local co-operative, but Gérard took the brave decision to go it alone.

The domaine is situated in the village of Calce, in the Vin-de-Pays appellation of Coteaux des Fenouilledes. As the name of the village suggests, the soils in this area are predominantly chalky and are suitable for both red and white wines.

A number of grape varieties are planted at the domaine, the reds include Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan, the whites are made from Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and, unusually for this area, Chenin Blanc.

The wines are elegant and modern with great balance and concentration.

The wines tend to be dominated by Grenache and to be rich and ruddy of complexion.
