Description

‘Old vines’ is a somewhat nebulous term, but the Carignan vines that provide 35% of this blend are unequivocally long in the tooth – planted up to 125 years ago. The remainder of the blend is Grenache (a mere 55 years-old), Mourvèdre and Syrah, which have been cultivated bio-dynamically since 2001. Like all the domain’s wines, Vieilles Vignes Rouge is bottled un-fined and unfiltered in order to capture as much as possible of its exceptional provenance.
The 2012 is redolent of the hillsides of Roussillon: aromas of garrigue and fresh black fruit. Black fruit dominates the palate, supported by firm tannins. The finish is long and confident.

Always a good intro into the wines from this estate, the 2012 Cotes du Roussillon Vieilles Vignes is mostly Syrah, yet incorporated 25% each of Carignan and Grenache. Aged in older barrel, it sports a ruby/purple, semi-opaque color that leads to a perfumed, elegant red that offers classic black cherry pit and raspberry-styled fruit, lots of resinous herbs, new leather and liquid violet-like aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, juicy and lively, with a firm edge to its acidity and tannin, it lacks the depth and richness of the 2011, but has beautiful fruit, stays nicely balanced and finishes with solid length. It should benefit from a year or two in the cellar, and drink nicely through 2022.

About this WINE

Domaine Gauby

Domaine Gauby

The modern era for this excellent Côtes du Rousillon estate dates from 1985 when the energetic Gérard Gauby took over the family estate. Previously the wines were sold in bulk to the local co-operative, but Gérard took the brave decision to go it alone.

The domaine is situated in the village of Calce, in the Vin-de-Pays appellation of Coteaux des Fenouilledes. As the name of the village suggests, the soils in this area are predominantly chalky and are suitable for both red and white wines.

A number of grape varieties are planted at the domaine, the reds include Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan, the whites are made from Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and, unusually for this area, Chenin Blanc.

The wines are elegant and modern with great balance and concentration.

As its name suggests VDP des Côtes Catalanes is one of the most Westerly of the zonal Vin  De Pays within the Vin De Pays D'Oc region. Located within the Pyrénees Orientales, this is one of the few designations that has forged a reputation in its own right. The wines tend to be dominated by Grenache and to be rich and ruddy of complexion.
