Description

This château has been owned by the négociant house Borie-Manoux since 1949. The company also owns Ch. Batailley in Pauillac and Ch. Beau Site in St Estèphe and is now run by Philippe Castéja. Trotte Vieille (the trotting old lady) refers to the legend of an old woman who lived here in the 18th century and spent her time trotting around in search of local gossip.

Classic St Emilion, this is already displaying some very appealing maturity. The wine glows a profound ruby in the glass, only breaking at the rim. Aromas of dried fruit and mocha signal depth, while the palate – generous and benevolent – offers spicy red fruits, a silky texture and well smoothed-out tannins.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Trottevieille has a pleasing leathery, undergrowth-scented bouquet that feels fully mature, although there is commendable vigor here (more so than the 2007 Canon). The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and tensile tannin, a keen thread of acidity and moderate depth but impressive focus towards the finish. It is fully mature with those ferrous and bell pepper notes on the finish, but I can see this offering another decade's worth of drinking pleasure, no problem. One to look out for. Tasted February 2017.

About this WINE

Chateau Trotte Vieille

Chateau Trotte Vieille

A 1er Grand Cru Classé (B) St. Emilion château which has been owned by the négociant house Borie-Manoux since 1949. The company also owns Château Batailley in Pauillac and Château Beau Site in St-Estèphe and is now run by Philippe Castéja. Trotte Vieille (the trotting old lady) refers to the legend of an old woman who lived here in the 18th century and spent her time trotting around in search of local gossip.

The property is located on a plateau east of St-Emilion and the 10-hectare walled vineyard is planted with Merlot (50%), Cabernet Franc (45%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). The grapes are hand-harvested and then fermented in small, temperature-controlled concrete vats. The wine is matured in oak barriques (80% new) for 18 months. It is bottled unfiltered.

Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This is actually the archetypal Bordeaux blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% (Mouton-Rothschild) to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity.

In St-Emilion and Pomerol, the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and  Australia.
