Description

The Pol Roger Rosé is often mooted by the critics as one of the best on the market. Pol Roger does not make a Non-Vintage Rosé, preferring to release only in vintage years. The 2006 Brut Rose Vintage is produced from a blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay drawn from some 20 Premiers and Grands crus on the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.

In order to obtain its delicate colour and subtle nose 15% Pinot Noir, from selected vineyards in Bouzy, Ambonnay and Cumieres, is vinified “en rouge” and added to the blend prior to the second fermentation.

Wonderfully salmon pink hue, with lots of fresh red berries on the nose, this is a fine rose from Pol Roger. Creamy and textured on the palate, this would be a brilliant match with a raspberry soufflé or summer pudding.

Fresh wild strawberries, whipped vanilla cream and caramelised pastry – no this isn’t a delicious pudding, but a regal rose Champagne from the infamous Pol Roger. A lovely rusty pink colour in the glass with spicy peppercorns, summer blossom and fresh herbs. The 2006 grips to your taste buds with layer upon layer of red summer berries. This has all of the finesse I would expect, with a persistent and long finish.

The salmon color of the 2006 Ros Brut with its pink and orange reflections is already magic and most probably unique. And then comes the nose: less subtle and discreet, but fine and elegant, deep, ripe and fleshy, with raw meat, nougat and licorice flavors intermingled with pure red berry (currant) and cherry aromas. Can you imagine this Ros is based on the Rserve Brut (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay)? It is, but before the bottling and second fermentation, approximately 15% of still red wine (Pinot Noir) from the crus of the Montagne de Reims is added. This extraordinary Ros Champagne is produced only in limited quantities and has been aged seven years before its release. Medium to full-bodied, smooth and fruit intense on the palate, this is another highly elegant and perfectly balanced Pol Roger fizz with a beautiful Pinot perfume in the finish. This is very sensual though complex Champagne that covers your tongue with pink silk. If you don't mind, I'd prefer to call this an excitingly erotic Champagne that I would love to drink on its own, but in any case not alone.

About this WINE

Pol Roger

Pol Roger

Pol Roger is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. The house remains family-owned and has a reputation for producing champagnes of finesse and elegance which age very well. Pol Roger Brut Rèserve Non-Vintage, made from equal parts of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, is consistently one of the very best on the market, largely due to the high proportion of aged reserve wines in the blend.

Pol Roger vintage wines, made from at least 60% Pinot Noir and up to 40% Chardonnay, are soft and fruit-driven in youth but, after ten years or so, develop great complexity and finesse. The Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, launched in 1984 and made from a secret blend, is a Champagne of exquisite finesse and balance and one that rivals the very best of the region.

Rosé Champagne

Rosé Champagne

Rosé wines are produced by leaving the juice of red grapes to macerate on their skins for a brief time to extract pigments (natural colourings). However, Rosé Champagne is notable in that it is produced by the addition of a small percentage of red wine – usually Pinot Noir from the village of Bouzy – during blending.

Champagne blend

Which grapes are included in the blend, and their proportion, is one of the key factors determining the style of most Champagnes. Three grapes are used - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.

26% of vineyards in Champagne are planted with Chardonnay and it performs best on the Côtes des Blancs and on the chalk slopes south of Epernay. It is relatively simple to grow, although it buds early and thus is susceptible to spring frosts. It produces lighter, fresher wines than those from Burgundy and gives finesse, fruit and elegance to the final blend. It is the sole grape in Blancs de Blancs, which are some of the richest long-lived Champagnes produced.

Pinot Noir accounts for nearly 40% of the plantings in Champagne and lies at the heart of most blends - it gives Champagne its body, structure, strength and grip. It is planted across Champagne and particularly so in the southern Aube district.

The final component is Pinot Meunier and this constitutes nearly 35% of the plantings. Its durability and resistance to spring frosts make the Marne Valley, a notorious frost pocket, its natural home. It ripens well in poor years and produces a soft, fruity style of wine that is ideal for blending with the more assertive flavours of Pinot Noir. Producers allege that Pinot Meunier lacks ageing potential, but this does not deter Krug from including around 15% of it in their final blends.
