Description

All wines are unique but some are more unique than others. Domaine Gauby’s La Roque Blanc has few peers among the white wines of Roussillon or anywhere else. Whole bunches of Muscat Blanc à Petit Grains and Muscat of Alexandria macerate for between ten and twenty days – an eternity in the context of white winemaking. Fermentation relies exclusively on indigenous yeasts.
The result is an astonishing array of aromas, including honeysuckle, orange blossom and fresh lemons; honed to a long, precise finish.

The Gauby 2012 La Roque for more on whose make-up, consult my accompanying review of the 2011 had only recently finished fermenting when I tasted it from its Austrian foudre last April. Softer in feel and fruitier in a peach and apricot way than that 2011 counterpart, it boasts a Chartreuse-like abundance of distilled floral and herbal essences that follow all the way through a surprisingly soothing finish. This looks to present quite the alter ego to the 2011 but in so doing to even more compellingly demonstrate the unanticipated diversity as well as profound potential of dry Roussillon Muscat. I suspect it will end up being best enjoyed by 2016, but thats just a guess, absent a relevant track record.

About this WINE

Domaine Gauby

Domaine Gauby

The modern era for this excellent Côtes du Rousillon estate dates from 1985 when the energetic Gérard Gauby took over the family estate. Previously the wines were sold in bulk to the local co-operative, but Gérard took the brave decision to go it alone.

The domaine is situated in the village of Calce, in the Vin-de-Pays appellation of Coteaux des Fenouilledes. As the name of the village suggests, the soils in this area are predominantly chalky and are suitable for both red and white wines.

A number of grape varieties are planted at the domaine, the reds include Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan, the whites are made from Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and, unusually for this area, Chenin Blanc.

The wines are elegant and modern with great balance and concentration.

VDP des Cotes Catalanes

As its name suggests VDP des Côtes Catalanes is one of the most Westerly of the zonal Vin  De Pays within the Vin De Pays D'Oc region. Located within the Pyrénees Orientales, this is one of the few designations that has forged a reputation in its own right. The wines tend to be dominated by Grenache and to be rich and ruddy of complexion.
