The Wine Advocate - For me, I want Touriga that is graceful in the mid-palate (compare the burlier Tinta Roriz here), built to age, and crisp and aromatic, without going overboard. This seems to handle all of the above, although #2, ageworthiness, isn’t likely to imitate the stern and powerful products we often see in Dao. Its only flaw is temporary – a bit too much oak showing just now. That was pretty much cured simply by holding it until the next day. A few years of cellaring should resolve that easily. It feels full in the mouth on first attack, and then becomes remarkably graceful.

Harmonious and impeccably balanced, it has a fresh feel, with well-integrated tannins and balanced aromatics, even though it is beautifully fragrant. It has none of the nose-wrinkling qualities Touriga can get if it goes overboard or becomes overripe and a bit funky. It is just floral and delightful. With some 3 hours of aeration, it woke up and showed wonderfully sensual expressiveness. I had some early reservations. That ended them. It was lovely, fresh and crisp the next day as well.

Quinta do Crasto, which traces its roots back to the 17th century, was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, a partner in the Port house of Constantino, in 1910. ln 1981, Constantino de Almeida’s granddaughter Leonor (“Tita”) and her husband Jorge Roquette took over the Quinta, determined to restore and revitalize the family estate. Following the change in Portuguese law (allowing single quintas to bottle and export wine), Crasto has been producing and exporting table and port wines since 1994.

Quinta do Crasto is arguably the finest estate for the production of red wine in Portugal.  Crasto's cult-wines such as the “Vinha Marie-Teresa”, is amongst the most highly rated and sought-after wines from Portugal, followed by the impeccably made Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz.  These wines have won the hearts of the consumer as well as the press - “Quinta do Crasto not only has some of the most breath taking views in the beautiful Douro Valley, but it has mastered the art of making red Douro table wine a thing of beauty, while many of its neighbours continue to overcomplicate and over-oak the stuff.”  - Oz Clarke

The Region



The Douro region begins 100km inland from Porto and extends east to the Spanish border. With its winding river, sculptured terraced hillsides and wild, hilly vistas it is one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world.

Dominated by the region’s famous fortified Ports, the Douro’s still wines are gaining a rapidly improving reputation. Most top wines are labelled as Douro DOC (Denominação de Origem Controlada) although there are also some good wines using French grape varieties (not authorised under the DOC) that are labelled as Vinho Regional Terras Durienses.

With much of the areas overlapping, the Douro DOC covers almost 38,000ha, the Vinho Regional slightly more (45,500ha) and the DO for Port slightly less (32,000ha). The region’s soils benefit from a thick layer of schist on top of the typical granite that abounds in most of northern Portugal. The schist absorbs and radiates heat back into the vines, while allowing the limited amount of rain to seep far into the ground and the vine roots to delve deep into the vertical planes.

The wines are predominantly red and range from relatively light, lively and fruity to deep, dark, concentrated and fully-flavoured. The former tend to be made from Rabigato, Gouveio, Codega, Donzelinho, Malvasia Fina and Viosinho while the latter come from the better-known Port varieties: Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional, Tinta Francesca, Tinto Cão, Bastardo, Mourisco Tinto, Tinta Amarela and Tinta Barroca. Classic French varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer are also planted and used to produce the Vinho Regional wines.
