Produttori del Barbaresco
Produttori del Barbaresco is located in the Barbaresco region of Piedmont, Italy. It is a cooperative winery established in 1958 by a group of 19 growers who recognised the potential of the Barbaresco region and decided to join forces. It has grown to include over 50 members who collectively cultivate approximately 100 hectares of vineyards.
The cooperative owns vineyards in different cru sites, including Asili, Montefico, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Pora, Rabajà, Rio Sordo, and Muncagota. These vineyards are known for their distinct terroirs and contribute to the complexity and character of the wines.
The primary grape variety used by Produttori del Barbaresco is Nebbiolo, indigenous to the Piedmont region. Nebbiolo produces wines with intense aromatics, high acidity, and firm tannins. The cooperative also has a small amount of Barbera and Dolcetto wines.
Produttori del Barbaresco focuses on traditional winemaking practices to preserve the authenticity and character of the Nebbiolo grape. The wines are fermented in large oak casks and undergo extended maceration to extract colour, flavour, and tannins. Ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels for an extended period, allowing the wines to develop complexity and refinement.
Barbaresco
The Piedmontese DOCG zone of Barbaresco is responsible for producing some of Italy’s finest wines. It occupies the same region and uses the same grape (Nebbiolo) as its bigger brother Barolo, but is a third of the size (only 640 hectares versus Barolo’s 1,700 hectares). It is also 50 years younger than Barolo, having produced wine labelled Barbaresco since 1890.
Barbaresco earned its DOCG after Barolo in 1980, largely thanks to the efforts of Angelo Gaja. The soils are lighter here than in Barolo – both in colour and weight – and more calcareous. The slopes are also less favourably situated and (relatively speaking) yield earlier-maturing yet extremely elegant wines that require less oak ageing (normally one year in oak plus six months in bottle). The appellation’s key districts are Barbaresco, Treiso, Neive and Alba.

Nebbiolo
Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.
A notoriously pernickety grape, it requires sheltered south-facing sites and performs best on the well-drained calcareous marls to the north and south of Alba in the DOCG zones of Barbaresco and Barolo.
Langhe Nebbiolo is effectively the ‘second wine’ of Piedmont’s great Barolo & Barbarescos. This DOC is the only way Langhe producers can declassify their Barolo or Barbaresco fruit or wines to make an early-drinking style. Unlike Nebbiolo d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo can be cut with 15% other red indigenous varieties, such as Barbera or Dolcetto.
Nebbiolo flowers early and ripens late, so a long hang time, producing high levels of sugar, acidity and tannins; the challenge being to harvest the fruit with these three elements ripe and in balance. The best Barolos and Barbarescos are perfumed with aromas of tar, rose, mint, chocolate, liquorice and truffles. They age brilliantly and the very best need ten years to show at their best.

Renowned for producing magnificent traditional-style Nebbiolos, their nine Single Vineyard Riservas are only released in the greatest vintages and the 2009 vintage continues the legacy. We were blown away by the sheer quality of these wines when we tasted them in our offices.
Packed in specially designed collection wooden cases, this is a perfect chance to taste all these special single vineyard riservas at the same time. These Collection cases are only available at the time of release; previous releases of the 2007 and 2008’s have sold out right away, while they are nearly impossible to source from secondary market.

2009 Riserva Rabaja
Dark cherries, menthol, cloves, cinnamon and leather wrap around the palate in the 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà. A rich, layered, enveloping wine, the Rabajà is a wine that shows plenty of character and personality. Deep, implosive and full of personality, the Rabajà is another wine that delivers tons of character, class and personality. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. 94+ Points.

2009 Riserva Asili
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Asili blossoms on the palate with lovely depth and richness. The fine Asili tannins are there, as the fruit shows its depth and roundness. The style is soft, supple and generous. The suave Asili personality comes through, but the pure excitement of the best vintages proves to be elusive. A generous, caressing finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. 92 Points.

2009 Riserva Montestefano
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano brings together the best qualities of the vintage, with a solid core of intense fruit, expressive aromatics and a measure of tannic heft that will keep the wine fresh and vibrant for many years. Dark cherry, plum, spice and leather notes flesh out on the huge, voluptuous finish. In 2009, the Montestefano is fabulous. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2034. 94 Points.

2009 Riserva Ovello
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is one of the more detailed, vibrant wines in this range. Sweet dark red cherries, mint, pine, graphite and crushed flowers all take shape in the glass. The typical high-toned Ovello bouquet, slightly firm tannins and energy are all there, making this one of the more site-specific of the 2009 Riservas. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029. 93 Points.

2009 Riserva Montefico
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the more striking wines in the range. Deeply expressive with regard to place, the Montefico is laced with dark cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, spice notes, all supported by the firm, incisive tannins and vibrant salinity that are the hallmark of this great site. There is little doubt the Montefico is one of the highlights in this range of 2009 Riservas from the Produttori. This is a terrific showing. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2034. 94 Points.

2009 Riserva Pora
Firm tannins provide the backbone for the 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Pora. Bigger and richer on the palate than it often is, the 2009 Pora is also quite beautiful in this vintage. Sweet floral and mint notes wrap around the palate in this impeccable, beautifully balanced, mid-weight Barbaresco from the Produttori. The 2009 impresses for its pliancy and generosity. Today, the tannins are a bit four-squared, but there is enough depth in the fruit to make me think the wine will come together a little more fully with more time in bottle. 2009 Riserva Muncagotta
One of the more beautiful and complete wines in the range, 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota impresses for its balance of aromatics, fruit and structure. Dark red cherry and plum notes flesh out in a juicy, expressive Barbaresco backed up by plenty of tannin and enough acidity to drink well for a number of years. Here it is the wine's harmony that is most impressive. I imagine the Muncagota will offer a wide window of rewarding drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029. 93 Points.

2009 Riserva Paje
The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is open, round and inviting. In this vintage, the Pajè is quite floral and open, with fewer of the darker, mentholated, spiced notes that I associate with this site. I expect the 2009 to drink well pretty much right out of the gate. With time in the glass, more Pajè character emerges, but overall, this is a relatively straightforward offering with fine balance but less site-specific character than normal. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2024. 90 Points.

2009 Riserva Rio Sordo
Dark red cherries, tobacco, menthol, licorice and mint waft from the glass in the 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo. This is an unusually dark, powerful Rio Sordo (within the context of the vintage) with fewer of the open, floral qualities that are the hallmark of this site. Today, the Rio Sordo is quite powerful and intense. It will be interesting to see if the finesse of this site develops with time. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. 91+ Points.
