Description

Grown in the foothills of Psiloritis, in the area of Asites, just 20km southwest of Heraklion, Zacharias Diamantakis’s Vidiano is another of those rare Cretan varieties revived from near-extinction.

Following a relatively low temperature fermentation and subsequent maturation on fine lees for three months, the wine is bottled, ready as the ideal accompaniment to a variety of seafood, pasta and poultry dishes.  Oily, expansive, textured, but redolent of lemon, bergamot and pear too. A wine that is as much about the way it feels on your palate, as the numerous flavours one can employ to describe it.

Demetri Walters MW - Sales Manager – Private Wine Events

Vidiano is a grape varietal of real class and character, giving wines that combine texture with fresh acidity. This excellent example hails from the family-run Diamantakis winery in Heraklion. Expect aromas including grape and quince, and an almond note on the long, savoury finish.

About this WINE

Diamantakis Winery

Diamantakis Winery

The Diamantakis family established their winery in 2007, but the family has a long history for growing table grapes. The vineyards are well-situated on a loamy, terraced location in a mountainous valley overlooking the Aegian Sea in the North East of Crete, and benefit from the cooling effect of the altitude & the sea breezes.

The 26-acres estate is run by the young viticulturist Zacharias Diamantakis who has been doing excellent work with indigenous (Malvasia, Mandilari) and international varieties (Syrah, Chardonnay).

His talent further extends to the region’s most striking, historic white grape variety, Vidiano, producing hand-crafted wines with wonderfully rich and expressive character likened to Viogner.

Indeed, with its exquisite floral aromas and spicy, full-bodied character, Vidiano’s popularity has soared domestically. This food-friendly, intensely flavoured wine has become an ideal calling card by which to discover the newly transformed face of the wine appellations in Crete.

Vidiano

Vidiano

The up-and-coming white wine grape variety of Vidiano is grown in small scale on the island of Crete, esp. around the area of Rethymnon. While there is still a limited vineyard acreage, producers agree on its tremendous quality potential and there is a drive to expand production & plantings to meet the increasing demand in Greece.

Vidiano grape is typically vinified on its own (rarely aged in oak), but  it also lends itself well for blending with other indigenous white varieties, like Vilana.  At its best, it yields wines of striking vibrancy with complex, well-knit layers of cleansing minerality, ripe peach and apricot notes, and fresh herbs, wrapped in a firm structure.

The style of Vidiano can be rich but never overripe or alcoholic. The true potential of the grape tends to unfold when planted in cooler high altitude vineyards .

It is a wine that develops its personality beautifully when paired with seafood pasta or charcoal grilled fishes. Although the true ageing ability of Vidiano is open to experimentation, producers believe that it has potential to age for at least five years.
