Description

The Anglo - German family Burmester can trace their roots in port back to 1750. The firm remained family owned for the next 250 years by various branches of the Burmester family, until it's sale to Amorim group just before the millennium. They are particularly noted for their Colheitas, tawny ports of a particular vintage, and their fine aged white ports. They have large library stocks of older wines, this 1937 Colheita being bottled only in 2010 after over seventy years aging in cask. A fantastic tipple for Christmas festivities.

Critics reviews

Jamie Goode97
Age really brings something to this wine. Intensely savoury nose with earth, spice and dried herb notes as well as some treacle/raisin sweetness. The palate is complex, savoury and spicy with lots of lovely cask notes and fresh acidity, as well as citrus, tar, spice, vanilla and nut characters. A long, long spicy finish.

Burmester Colheita

Burmester Colheita

Burmester can trace their origins back to 1730, when Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a cereal trading company. After a move to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750, the Burmester Port Shipping Company was born.

Today the company specialises in Port at the top-end quality level, with Colheita (vintage dated tawnies) their particular area of expertise.

Colheita

Colheita

A Colheita (literally `harvest' or `crop') is an aged Tawny Port made with grapes from a single vintage. By law, Colheitas should be matured in wooden casks for at least seven years, although in practice they tend to be aged for much longer - sometimes up to 50 years. They are bottled only when the producer decides that the Port is ready to drink, and should be drunk in the following year or so. The label should carry both the vintage and the bottling date.

Colheita is a relatively rare style which is a shame as many are exceptional, combining all the sweet, dried fruit and nutty finesse of an aged Tawny with individual vintage character. They normally offer outstanding value too. In order to make the category more appealing to consumers, some shippers have replaced `Colheita' with the term `Single Harvest Reserve', with some success. The term Colheita is also used for single-vintage Madeiras.
