Description

This wine comes from vineyards located high up in the Majella hills on the east coast of Italy, meaning it benefits from a mixture of sea and land breeze. Mineral notes and nuances of bitter almond and herbal characters are evident on the nose. This continues on the palate with bright acidity lifting the fruit and leading to a direct finish.

About this WINE

Cantina Frentana

Cantina Frentana

Cantina Frentana, founded in 1958, is located on the Majella hills near to the Costa dei Trabocchi on the East coast of Italy. The chalky soil, mixture of sea and land breeze and the natural mitigation of the sea make it an ideal location for the grapes that are produced.

The vineyards bank, known as Banca dei vigneti, uses organic production techniques and has been cultivated from many years of shared knowledge and experience.  Moving forward, the entire vineyard at Cantina Frentana is working towards being cultivated organically.

Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio

Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio

A first class grape variety grown in Alsace, where it is known as Tokay Pinot Gris, and in Italy, where it is called Pinot Grigio. In Alsace it is best suited to the deep, clay rich soils found in the north of the region where it produces richly honeyed, dry whites as well as superb sweet late harvest wines. At its best it combines the heady perfume and rich aroma of Gewürztraminer with the acidity one associates with Riesling. It ages very well, developing rich buttery characteristics.

In Northern Italy Pinot Grigio produces many thin undistinguished dry whites. However it comes into its own in Friuli-Venezia and the Alto Adige, where leading producers such as Alvaro Pecorari of Lis Neris produce marvellously rounded, elegant, and mineral laden examples. Pinot Gris is now grown with notable success in Oregon in the USA and in New Zealand.
