These different rums can vary greatly in style and taste: spicy or fruity, white or dark, smoky or bright. Broadly speaking, there are three distinctive styles of rum, which have been shaped by historical colonial forces: British, French and Spanish.
Rums made in English-speaking regions, such as Barbados and Belize, tend to be heavier and richer in style. Those made in French-speaking areas, such as Haiti, are likely to be leafy and smoky; while Spanish-speaking countries, such as Nicaragua and Guatemala, are likely to produce a lighter, brighter style of rum. Description
Although the Caribbean boasts a long history of rum distilling, born of the sugar plantations that began to develop in the 17th century, Fiji too makes some interesting and worthy product. Fiji has its own unique style and with maturity the full, intense fruit, spice and, often, molasses flavours shine through.
This fine Fijian rum has powerful aromas with some tarry and briny oceanic notes. The palate offers tropical fruits with traces of liquorice and orange citrus. If you have never tasted Fijian rum this is a great starting point.
