Description

Thomas Jefferson was America's first wine connoisseur. As the West End prepares for the arrival of Hamilton this autumn, here at Berry Bros. & Rudd we will remember Revolutionary America from the perspective we know best: fine wine. We will take a closer look at Thomas Jefferson's cellar, rumoured to have run up debts from Monticello to Paris. The author of the Declaration of Independence and America’s third president is known to have had a soft spot for classic European showstoppers. Long before Cabernet was king in California, colonial America was influenced by Europe's famous regions; and Jefferson enjoyed them all, from Bordeaux to Tuscany, Madeira to Tokaj.

Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, we will explore Jefferson's cellar with the studied expertise of Elizabeth Linder, London resident and scholar of US history, who first encountered Thomas Jefferson's penchant for wine while cataloguing the meticulously-written Jefferson Papers at Princeton University's Rare Books Division. Sampling some of the styles Jefferson enjoyed alongside a menu designed by our Head Chef, this is guaranteed to be a unique and very special evening.

Dress code: smart casual

NB Wines for this event will be chosen from Berry Bros. & Rudd’s stock at the time of the event, so most will be available to order afterwards.
