Description

Waterford Estate's Kevin Arnold, one of South Africa’s preeminent winemakers, will lead a tasting of six of the estate’s most famous wines; while Graham Boynton, a journalist who specialises in African politics, takes you on a socio-political journey through four centuries of the Cape’s wine industry.

In 1652, the Dutch East India Company commissioned a surgeon named Jan Van Riebeck to build a fort and a farming community in the Cape, Africa’s southernmost port. Over the next 200 years or so, South African viticulture flourished. Constantia’s natural sweet wine was mentioned in the pages of Austen and was Napoleon’s favourite tipple. However, under Apartheid’s iron grip, winemakers had to smuggle foreign vines into the country in their babies’ nappies and inside their trouser legs, and the industry struggled.

Today, the dramatic physical beauty of the Cape winelands and the range of premium wines produced there are the envy of the world.
