Description

Here at Berry Bros. & Rudd we regularly recount the stories, people and properties that have put Californian wine on the map and established its global reputation. From the famed Judgement of Paris in 1976 and the collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Baron de Rothschild, to the iconic restaurants earning their Michelin stars in Yountville and the unmistakable lettering on a bottle of Ridge’s Monte Bello.
And yet, to only begin the story of Californian winemaking in the twentieth century would be to miss out on all the prior fun. Before California became America's 31st State in 1850, its reputation for the promise of gold, the lure of land and the freedom from certain laws, courts and property rights rendered it at once rather rowdy and experimental. It lured immigrants the world over to try their luck, re-imagine their fortunes and search for new identities against the backdrop of the sweeping Pacific Ocean and the towering redwoods. The “Pony Express” swept through wooden side-walked towns, French architects charted out the master plan for the city of San Francisco, and Sacramento hardware store owners invested in the Transatlantic Railroad – eventually connecting "sea to shining sea."
During this time, California's wine industry blossomed, bolstered by the many nationalities pouring into the American West. Join Sacramento native and Napa Valley resident Elizabeth Linder to chart the rambunctious stories of a state that produces more than 90 percent of American wine. You will be served a Wild West-inspired four-course meal alongside an apéritif and six wines. We look forward to seeing you back at the ranch. Hosted by Rebecca Lamont, Head of Wine School
