After the magnificent 2004, universally lauded in Rioja, 2005 was a warmer and perhaps more ‘straightforward’ Rioja vintage, using, of course, the word ‘straightforward’ in its least pejorative sense to imply classic harvest conditions with fine ripe fruit.
The Tinto Reserva is made from 91% Tempranillo, 6% Garnacha and 3% Mazuelo, its grapes treated to generous maceration then an even more generous period of elevage, which lasted for over two years in new and semi-new American vats.
The wine is terrific, distinctly Rioja with its cherry fruit, and herbal and vanillin profile, yet also with a depth of flavour which has harnessed the ripeness with subtle and slightly smoky tannins, the ensemble of which underlines the complexity of structure. Gastronomically versatile, the wine will age well. (Simon Field MW , BBR Buyer)
