Description

The Loire Valley is famous for producing brilliant whites and rosés. In our six-bottle collection, you’ll find a rich Sancerre rosé – deeper and weightier than the Provençal style – a Reuilly Blanc and a Saumur Blanc from Frédéric Mabileau.

This mixed case contains two of the following wines:

2019 Sancerre Rosé, Daniel Chotard, Loire

This charming Sancerre rosé comes from Pinot Noir grapes grown on pebbly griottes soil; it’s this, a type of limestone, to which Simon Chotard attributes the wine’s finesse and floral aromas. Raised in stainless steel and bottled young, freshness is the order of the day. There’s a touch more weight here than you’re likely to find in a rosé from, say, Provence, so the wine works well with chicken, pork and even delicate red meat dishes. Drink now to 2022.

2020 Reuilly Blanc, Les Pierres Plates, Denis Jamain, Loire

The village of Reuilly shares the same Kimmeridgian limestone found in Chablis and Sancerre – making it an excellent source of cool, mineral Sauvignon Blanc. The name of this wine refers to these large, flat slabs of fossil-containing limestone regularly found in the vineyard, and which give the wine its chalky mouthfeel. Denis Jamain – undoubtedly the master of Reuilly – makes wines which rival even the best Sancerre, at a fraction of the price. This wine is made entirely in steel, giving a grassy, citrus-driven wine with a mouth-watering finish. Drink now to 2024.

2017 Saumur Blanc, Chenin du Puy, Frédéric Mabileau, Loire

Frédéric Mabileau is famed as the leading light of St Nicolas de Bourgueil. He also makes this excellent Chenin Blanc from a hectare in Saumur on the hill of Puy-Notre-Dame. This is a wonderful blend of ripe, juicy peach, apricot and pineapple fruit, balanced with mouth-watering acidity and a lick of toasty oak. The soil is well-exposed with a high limestone content, yielding this wonderful juxtaposition of ripeness and freshness in the wine. Careful fermentation and ageing in large oak barrels give complexity and texture. Drink now to 2035.
