Bursting Bubbles: A Secret History of Champagne and the Rise of the Great Growers by Robert Walters is a controversial book (first published in 2016) that traces the rise of the aforementioned “great growers” – a group of producers who, unlike the traditional and most famous names of the region, make wine with fruit they have grown themselves. The drive behind the movement, as described in this fascinating book, is to prove that Champagne is for much more than celebrations and – like the world’s greatest wines and regions – can be expressive of a place and time. While certainly a spirited view of someone championing the movement (and far from objective), it’s a terrific read.
