The Strathmill distillery has been founded as a result of the convertion of an old corn mill, during the whisky-boom in 1891 under the name Glenisla-Glenlivet Distillery. It has been taken over in 1894 by the W&A Gilbey company (who were also owners of Glen Spey and Knockando) and subsequently acquired by Diageo.
For years, it has been a core ingredient in the Dunhill/Old Master blends. The production is not marketed as single malt, and therefore the only available bottlings are those of independent bottlers. The house style of Strathmill has been described as the whisky's answer to orange Muscat (Michael Jackson- Malt Whisky Companion)
