Description

Sharing a name and village (Vertus) with the magnificently fashionable House Larmandier-Bernier in Champagne does not seem to have posed too many problems for Mme Larmandier of Champagne Guy Larmandier (one has not dared to enquire yet as to her Christian name) and her son François. Their Champagnes have a very distinct personality – floral, generous and wonderfully elegant.

The nose is honeyed with lime blossom and white peach – fresh, floral and elegant. There is a typical Cramant softness on the palate, with lovely harmony, absolutely no rough edges and a long creamy finish. Uncomplicated and hedonistic, this is a magnificent vin de plaisir, a pure old-school expression of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay: floral, rounded and wonderfully complete. White fruits, honeysuckle and gently buttered toast all vie for attention; this is impossible to resist!

White fruits, honeysuckle and gently buttered toast all vie for attention; the wine has all the honest exuberance of the man himself and is impossible to resist!

Wine Advocate92/100
The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cramant offers up an array of exotic aromas and flavors in a full-bodied, intense style. Notes of mint, ash, flowers, licorice, graphite and apricots emerge from this decidedly masculine, brooding wine. Sweet, long and powerful, the wine shows outstanding persistence on the palate and the pure breed of a first-class wine. As the name implies, this is 100% Chardonnay from Cramant.

I was thrilled with the wines I tasted from Guy Larmandier, a small, artisan grower based in Vertus. These Champagnes boast notable elegance and personality. Larmandier farms just under eight hectares of vineyards, most of which are planted with Chardonnay.

Powerful, with almost a tannic group and hints of gunpowder, incense. Feels drier than most, with serious rigour. Plenty of gastronmic potential.
Drink 2017-2022.

Champagne Guy Larmandier

Sharing a name and village (Vertus) with the magnificently fashionable La Maison Larmandier Bernier  in Champagne does not seem to have posed too many problems for Mme Larmandier of Champagne Guy Larmandier (one has not dared to enquire yet as to her Christian name) and her son François.

Their champagnes have a very distinct personality, with most of the vineyards in fact located a little to the north of Vertus in the Grand Cru villages of Cramant and Chouilly. The wines capture the essence of the ‘Cramant style’ that is to say they are floral, generous and wonderfully elegant.

Their champagnes include a Blanc de Blancs NV, a pure old school expression of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay, floral, rounded and wonderfully complete, as well as a Cramant Prestige that showcases the quality of  its Grand Cru Cramant  provenance.

Blanc de Blancs

Blanc de Blancs

In Champagne, the term Blanc de Blancs designates Champagnes made only from Chardonnay grapes. The vineyards located between Cramant and Mesnil-sur-Oger in Cote de Blancs yield the best examples of the style.

A classic Blanc de Blancs is restrained and elegant when young, yet with ageing it develops a mouth-coating brioche richness that overlays an intense expression of fruitiness. Blanc de Blancs are endowed with longer ageing potential than a typical Blanc de Noirs.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or.

Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

It is quantitatively important in California and Australia, is widely planted in Chile and South Africa, and is the second most widely planted grape in New Zealand. In warm climates Chardonnay has a tendency to develop very high sugar levels during the final stages of ripening and this can occur at the expense of acidity. Late picking is a common problem and can result in blowsy and flabby wines that lack structure and definition.

Recently in the New World, we have seen a move towards more elegant, better- balanced and less oak-driven Chardonnays, and this is to be welcomed.
