1998 was the second smallest vintage of the decade and not generally declared by the major brands but the quality was suitable for single-quintas. The generally year favoured traditional Grade "A", lower altitude vineyards as they were protected by most of the variable weather conditions.
Following a wet winter, summer was hotter than usual and the grape maturations were irregular due to the poor berry setting caused by unsettled spring weather. By the end of September the weather broke and the heavens opened up to dash away any real hopes for an excellent vintage. However the resulting wines produced are sensational for both their colour and wonderful aromas.
