Southwestern parts of Spain fared best in the 2002 wine vintage, with very cold temperatures in December, followed by drought conditions during the latter part of year affected the start of the Tempranillo growing season. Garnacha vines were spared the damage probably because this variety is more resistant to adverse conditions.
