A high quality vintage in South Australia, with the best wines being on a par with the stunning 1990s. Spring was unseasonalby wet but was followed by a hot and dry summer and autumn. Yields were down by as much as 30% on the 1990s but the quality was extremely high, especially in the Mclaren Vale and Adelaide Hills.
Yields were also on the low side in Victoria with cool temperatures leading to an extended growing season. The best wines are elegant and well balanced, although they lack the power and concentration of the 1990s.
A baking-hot and dry year in Western Australia led to some outstanding red wines being produced. The Margaret River reds are rich and powerful and are amongst the finest produced in the decade.
