A record harvest for South African wines in terms of volume. The growing season was predominantly cool with several late showers occurring at harvest time. Some excellent Chardonnays were produced by growers who harvested early and whose fruit remained virus-free. However, the vast majority should have been consumed by now.
A difficult year for the reds, with the majority of the wines being rather green and lean. However, those producers whose vineyards were disease-free and who made a rigorous selection at harvest time, have produced some notable wines.
