This year represents the beginning of a trio of textbook vintages in Sauternes and Barsac. A hot, dry summer was followed by a tempestuous September and then a glorious Indian summer throughout October. The harvest was spread out over October and the first 2 weeks of November and produced wines of great refinement and richness.
In the context of the 1989s and 1990s, this is often considered the most classic vintage, similar in character to the 1986s but richer. Not , d`Yquem stands out as the finest wine and has a great future ahead of it. Rieussec is the pick of the 2ème Crus, producing an amazingly well-balanced and rich Sauternes that eclipses its offering from 1989 and 1990. It is delicious now but will keep for 2 more decades.
