After the 3 glorious preceding years, Sauternes producers came down with a bump in 1991 when challenging weather conditions led to a small and very variable vintage. The region was badly affected by spring frosts and prospects were further dashed by heavy August rains. Some sweet wine producers made amazingly good wines, considering the weather - the very best picked late, selected with care and have made some good wines that have immediate appeal.
