Arguably the finest Northern Rhône vintage of the 80s although quality in the Southern Rhône wines was much more variable. In the north early summer rains were followed by drought-like conditions in late July and throughout August. Temperatures remained exceptionally high throughout September and super-ripe grapes were harvested.
In Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie exceptional wines were produced - they are characterised by their depth of colour and complexity and display marvellous intensity and concentration on the palate with the best examples being extremely long-lived.
In the south quality suffered from the heavy rains that fell during the harvest. However the best wines are well balanced and eminently drinkable - they are all now fully mature.
