A very good vintage throughout France, and the Rhône Valley is no exception. In the Northern Rhône yields were reduced by as much as 20% due to the effects of coulure and millerandage during the flowering. July and August were hot and dry with the vintage beginning early on 4th September. Almost ideal weather conditions prevailed throughout the harvesting period.
In Côte Rôtie this was the best overall vintage since 1991, while in Hermitage the wines display more finesse and richer fruit flavours than the corresponding 1994s and are reminiscent of the 1985s in style.
In the Southern Rhône the hot summer resulted in superb, deeply coloured, well-structured and concentrated wines being produced. Châteauneuf-du-Pape was extremely successful, with the best wines being similar in style to those produced in 1989.
