Simon Field MW, Buyer
Simon has been a Buyer for Berry Bros. & Rudd since 2001. Before joining the firm he qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG and then worked in industry and the city before, in his own words, he “saw the light” and joined the wine trade in 1995.
Simon joined Berry Bros. & Rudd in 1998, first as a Buying Assistant and then an Assistant Buyer, finally becoming a Buyer in 2001. Since then he has stayed in his "fascinating" role and sources a range of wines from Spain, Portugal, England, and, in France, Champagne, Languedoc, Roussillon, Provence, Rhône and the South West. He is also responsible for sourcing Berry Bros. & Rudd’s Fortified Wines.
Simon's job entails maintaining relationships with growers, and he is happiest when taking regular trips to visit the vineyards and assessing each new vintage in situ. He loves to explore the minutiae of differing vintages and different characteristics of wine that feed into the winemaker’s theory of terroir – that a wine is the product of its environment.
Simon also compiles en primeur and other offers for customers, as well as writing tasting notes as guidance on our website. As one of Berry Bros. & Rudd’s Masters of Wine, he also regularly educates classes at the Wine School. When not in a vineyard or a cellar, Simon is a keen opera fan.
Expert’s Wine Tip:
Simon’s favourite wine is Spanish: Lopez de Heredia’s Tondonia Grand Reserva Blanco 1981. He describes it as: "A Dorian Gray of a wine which gets younger as it ages, a wine of inordinate complexity and boundless energy; beeswax, honey, blossom and verbena are merely the first examples of an encyclopaedic panoply of descriptors which come, synaesthetically, to mind."
