Chateau Roland La Garde
Chateau
Roland La Garde is a small estate in Premieres Cotes de Blayes,
producing just 4,000 cases of claret annually. The vines, now about 20 years
old, are mainly on a clay and chalk subsoil and unsurprisingly in view of that
the blend is 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Bruno Martin manages the chateau's vineyards applying biodynamic principles, such as ploughing the soil or partially growing grass between the rows, without using chemical weed-killers.
The wine spends 1 year in oak, 1/3 new, 1/3 1 year-old and 1/3 2 year-old barrels. Harvesting is by hand and fining by egg whites, suggesting serious commitment to quality production.
