Château Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel has 131 hectares of vineyards which makes it one of the largest estates in the Châteauneuf du Pape region. Beaucastel was one of the very first domaines to practise organic viticulture - namely no use of herbicides, insecticides or any other chemicals. Unusually, all 13 permitted grape varieties are grown although it is Mourvèdre which is Beaucastel`s signature grape, often making up a third of the final blend.

Beaucastel is renowned for its controversial vinification "á chaud" which involves rapidly heating the incoming grapes, which extracts colour and aroma and kills harmful bacteria. Beaucastel's wines are matured in 500-litre oak casks and, after blending, are bottled with a light fining and without being filtered.

From vines in close proximity to the great Châteauneuf-du-Pape property itself, the Coudoulet de Beaucastel is famous in the Wine Trade for being vastly superior to its Côtes du Rhône appellation tag. Low yields and high quality fruit underwrite the quality, and six months ageing in foudre completes the picture. The Perrins consider this wine to be an integral part of their impressive portfolio.

Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsualt make up the blend of this distinctly superiour Côtes Du Rhône from vineyards surprisingly close to the Beaucastel Château itself. The 2006, true to the hall-marks of this very approachable vintage, boasts ripe dense blackberry and cassis fruit, with finely wrought tannins and a peppery flourish at the finish to underline provenance.

"This inky/ruby colured cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cheery fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mouvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years... Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025..." 96/100 pts. (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Feb 2004) MORE

"The power of the 30% Mourvedre, already evidenced with the notes of charcuterie and bacon rind, will ensure longevity and an extensive and satisfying chronological crescendo over the next fifteen years."

80% of Roussanne, vinified in barrique, announces itself confidently, from the blossom and quince on the nose to the honey on the palate. Thus far a youthful caress of velvety texture; the minerality will accompany its later journey into maturity.

The 30% Mourvèdre is evident in the generous colour and savoury nose of the 2006; a big and powerful wine, with tar, liquorice and bonfire in support of the dense black fruit, the sweetness of which is thus far enigmatically and subtly shrouded. All will be revealed!

Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Southern Rhône Blend, For laying down, Organic (Certified), Biodynamic (Not certified/in conversion), 13.5% alc.

The 2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin (a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 40% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Counoise -normally it includes 60% Mourvedre and 20% Grenache) has turned out even better than I thought last year. Black purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of smoke, camphor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherry, white flowers, licorice, and Chinese black tea, the wine has superb richness, huge tannins, massive concentration, and a monster finish. Forget this wine until 2001 and drink it over the following 35 or more.

The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a blend of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise, and 10% Syrah... It boasts an inky/blue/purple color in addition to a promising nose of new saddle leather, melted asphalt, camphor, blackberries, smoky, roasted herbs, and Asian spices. A huge lashing of tannin as well as a formidable structure result in the antithesis of its more flattering, forward, and voluptuous sibling, the classic Beaucastel. ... wait at least a decade before it begins to approach adolescence.

"The 1999 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a classic blend of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 10% Counoise. Its inky/black/purple colour is accompanied by a fabulous perfume of licorice, smoke, truffles, tapenade, blackberries, and cassis. Extremely full-bodied, with masses of extract, high tannin, and a structured, long finish, it is a sumptuous effort that should keep for 25-35 years. " Robert Parker- Wine Advocate -Dec 2001 MORE
