Description

From the implausibly picturesque region of Robertson, this Chardonnay is a result of the efforts of a number of family growers working together, but each responsible for their own individual farms. Thanks to Robertson’s policy of minimal intervention, this Chardonnay is all about the pure expression of fruit with clean, high tones of citrus sitting harmoniously with more tropical notes and a faint nuttiness from the oak.

Critics reviews

Jamie Goode
A very stylish chardonnay from the heart of South Africa’s wine country in the Western Cape region, this offers rounded pear fruit
with some ripe-apple notes and a hint of spiciness, too. Pure, broad and sophisticated, this is a lot of wine for your money.

About this WINE

Robertson Winery

Robertson Winery

The Robertson Winery co-operative was set up in 1941 in a disused stone church, which had been built by the community and serviced by missionaries. The small church building was put to use for winemaking and cellaring operations. Today, the winemaking team is guided by Francois Weich and Jacques Roux who both have been with Robertson Winery for over 12 years.  Briaan Stipp’s team of viticulturists oversee the 7.5 million vines grown on over 40 farms.

In 2012 two more winemakers were welcomed into the Robertson Winery family in time for the harvest : Olivia Poonah and Thys Loubser.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or.

Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

It is quantitatively important in California and Australia, is widely planted in Chile and South Africa, and is the second most widely planted grape in New Zealand. In warm climates Chardonnay has a tendency to develop very high sugar levels during the final stages of ripening and this can occur at the expense of acidity. Late picking is a common problem and can result in blowsy and flabby wines that lack structure and definition.

Recently in the New World, we have seen a move towards more elegant, better- balanced and less oak-driven Chardonnays, and this is to be welcomed.
