2007 Tinto Reserva, Bodegas Muga

Tinto Reserva, Bodegas Muga
One of the greatest of the traditional Rioja houses Bodega Muga was founded in Haro in 1932 and is still in family ownership. The key to the Muga philosophy is wood, from the architecture of the magnificent 18th century Bodega itself to the impressive collection of 14,000 barrels used for the maturation. In addition the wines are fermented in large wooden casks, of which there were 90, all of subtly differing sizes, at the last count.

Tinto Reserva, the Muga flagship is a well-decked vessel, its grapes farmed on prime calcerous sites around the medieval city of Haro, its complex components (70% Tempranillo , 20% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo and Graciano) given suitably respectful treatment, by which I mean 30 months oak ageing followed by another year in bottle pre-release. The wood, interestingly, is both American and French. This inherent complexity translates effortlessly into a multiplicity of taste profiles; those currently in the ascendant are red berries, mocha and distant autumn bonfires.

Tinto Reserva, Bodegas Muga
The 2007 Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo with the balance Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano aged initially for 6 months in wood vats followed by 24 months in 60% new French and American oak prior to bottling without filtration.

It displays classic Rioja aromas of cedar, leather, mineral, a hint of balsamic, and assorted black fruits. Layered on the palate but slightly austere at present, it has the structure to evolve for another 4-6 years at which point it is likely to have filled out thus meriting a higher rating. Drink this impressive Rioja from 2015 to 2027.
