Description

Lake Neusiedel is the location of this fabulous Seewinkel desert wine, late harvested, partly botrytised and astonishing value especially given the tiny yields and the fact that each bunch has to be picked by hand. The blend is pretty much equal parts of Welchriesling, Bouvier and Pinot Blanc…….. unusual to say the least, but easily achieving the sugar level required for a Beerenauslese. The wine has peach, apricot and damask rose on the nose, then a palate which is sweet (100 g/l or thereabouts) but extremely pure, refreshing and elegant. Perfect with foie gras or fruit tart! Up to you , but either will work well.

About this WINE

Weingut Velich

Weingut Velich

Weingut Velich is a small family estate which was originally established in the 1930s. Today the estate is run by 3rd generation brothers Roland and Heinz Velich. The vineyards have recently been expanded from 3 to 10 hectares, with a new winery being completed in time for the 1999 vintage.

Most of the Chardonnay is planted on loam and gravel and sand around Lake Neusiedl. Both Tiglat and Darscho are fermented and matured in French barriques, a percentage of which is new. Tiglat, from a single vineyard, is now recognised as one of Austria's best Chardonnays.

Neusiedlersee

Neusiedlersee

Neusiedlersee is part of the broader Burgenland wine region. Lying on Austria’s easternmost border with Hungary, there is an other-worldly sense about this region, principally derived from the extraordinary Lake Neusiedl and the surrounding National Park.  The lake covers 300 km² but at no point is it more than 2 metres deep.  Such a large body of shallow, warm water makes the arrival of botrytis cinerea (noble rot) for the production of late harvest wines around its shores a predictable annual event, and it also moderates the effects of the heat and dust of the Central European Pannonian plain.

Whilst the region is best known for its sweet wines, which are produced both in Rust on the western shore, and around Apetlon and Illmitz on the eastern shores, the Lietagebirge to the west and north provide slopes for the production of excellent dry white and red wines.  Many different varieties are grown, and sweet wines are made out of nearly all of them, but among them the Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent red varieties are especially successful.

Recommended Producers:

There are many fine producers in the region, nearly all producing a wide range of wines.  For sweet wines, Velich, Lang and Kracher are renowned.  For reds, and dry whites, Umathum, Pittnauer and Feiler-Artinger are among many interesting producers.
