Wines from the Jura
A hitherto little-known French region, now coming of age.
Old vine wines made from the Carignan and Cinsault grapes
Old vines have a tendency to yield lower quantities of denser, more concentrated fruit. This in turn produces wines which are full of depth and character.
Things are changing again in California. The new generation of young Californian winemakers are focusing more on terroir than ultimate ripeness and putting ‘sunshine in a bottle’. Also, challenging preconceptions, alcohol levels are much less than anticipated: at a recent industry tasting showing Chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot Noirs even a Zinfandel most were around 12.5.
English Sparkling wines
English sparkling wine has certainly come of age: top English sparkling wine is, rather excitingly, beginning to acquire its own personality. Gone are the grassy, tart flavours of yore, and in their place we taste honey, brioche and delicate yellow fruit, more than able to challenge the Champagne hegemony.
Eastern European wines
With wine production spanning 3000 years, with more recent wine production affected by the Second World war and communism, a new breed of small-scale producers are making excellent quality and fantastic value hand-crafted wines.
