Chateau Cheval Blanc

Château Cheval Blanc, a 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) is unquestionably the leading estate in St. Emilion. It is located in the north-west of the St. Emilion appellation, bordering Pomerol.

Cheval Blanc's vineyards (Merlot 39%, Cabernet Franc 57%, Malbec 3%, Cabernet Sauvignon 1%) enjoy a variety of soils: gravel, clay and sand, all underpinned by an impermeable sedimentary rock (`crasse de fer'). Fermentation and maceration last 4 weeks in stainless steel vats, followed by 18 months' maturation in new oak barrels.

Cheval Blanc produces the most famous Cabernet Franc-based wine in the world and present régisseur Pierre Lurton is amongst the most talented winemakers working in Bordeaux today. Cheval Blanc requires a minimum 10 years of bottle age and the best vintages can last for 50 years or more.

50:50 Cabernet Franc:Merlot - comprises 30 per cent of total production at Cheval Blanc in 2005. Extremely deep crimson. Very very rich and flattering on the nose. Lovely dancing lively fruit on the front palate. Gorgeous already with quite a lot of freshness and acidity and a neat, dry finish. A little alcoholic on the finish. Already approachable - Pierre Lurton prefers it to Cheval Blanc at this stage. One of the most open, charming 2005s I´ve tasted. Great lift. 13.6 per cent. One is extremely aware of very ripe Merlot and gravelly terroir on the nose of this wine. Pounded raspberry note.

"For those not lucky or rich enough to purchase the 2000 Cheval Blanc, there is an alternative ... the 2000 Le Petit Cheval.... A blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc (40% of the production made it into this wine), it does not have the mass or depth of the Cheval, but this exceptional effort offers sweet, concentrated, plush flavors, wonderful opulence, and lovely density. This beauty will be drinkable upon release, and will last for 12-15 years. Believe it or not, the 2000 Le Petit Cheval is better than some vintages of Cheval Blanc have been over the last two decades." 90/100 pts - (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Apr-2003)

"Good colour. A bit closed-in on the nose. Fullish. Rich and gently oaky. Fresh, elegant and juicy-fruity. Lacks the depth and concentration of a really fine vintage. Yet poised and harmonious and fine for a 2002. From 2010." (Clive Coates - The Vine - May-2004)

This is a truly great Cheval Blanc. Just a smidgen below the quality of the 2005 (yes, really) it is a monster of a wine, and utterly complete. Overflowing with dense fruit, huge tannins and balanced acidity it has all the tools to age majestically. The nose is all creamy, rich, intense black fruit while the harmonious palate boasts cool, incredibly concentrated, elegant cassis and plums with an astonishing pure, complex finish that we could still taste 10 minutes after leaving the château. Without a shadow of doubt, the wine of the vintage.

Director Pierre Lurton has one of the best and hardest jobs in Bordeaux, managing two of the region's great estates, Cheval Blanc and d'Yquem. In 2006 he been successful once again producing what he rightly calls 'a cashmere' Cheval Blanc. It is an outstanding wine, with a stylish, velvety texture, power and elegance and a lovely mouthwatering freshness. It has more Merlot than usual giving it a seductive richness, along with concentrated raspberry, blackberry and plum fruit and supple tannins. Just as you think you have tasted everything, another wave of fruit sweeps in on the long finish. Drink: 2020-2040.

"Fullish, mature colour. Not as vigorous as the 1967. Lovely, ripe, rich, intense, fagrant nose. This is luscious and sexy. Fullish body. Very ripe, rich and concentrated. Lovely fruit. Very well-covered tannins. This is very lovely. More ample than Haut-Brion. More alive too. Very long and vigorous". (Clive Coates - January 2000)
