Jacquesson


Voted the third best of all Champagne Houses (after Bollinger and Krug) in 2005 La Revue Des Vins De France, Jacquesson has really come of age. Based in the evocatively named town of Dizy, just to the north of Epernay, the House is run by the Chiquet brothers (cousins of our own Gaston Chiquet). These are very serious Champagnes with an emphasis on minerality and complexity of fruit. The wines have significant gravitas, are good food companions and age beautifully.

"Made from 39% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 36% Pinot Meunier, the 732 comes predominantly from the extensive but high quality 2004 vintage ( 21% of older Reserve wines added). After the rococco extravagance of the 2003-based 731, this is a more classic Jacquesson, its 3.5 g dosage providing a mineral foundation to the fine palate of crushed chalk, white peach and soft honey. A fine mousse and powerful finish complete a very harmonious picture; a wine that will open up over the next couple of years." (Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer)

"From three specific sites (' lieux-dits') in the Grand Cru village of Avize, at the heart of the Côte des Blancs, this wine is from the highest quality Chardonnay vines, vinified partially in large oak casks, partly in stainless steel , with the former benefiting from lees stirring to add flavour and weight. 1997 is a ripe, approachable and very attractive vintage; the toasty fruit thereby engendered is pleasingly juxtaposed with the more normal Jacquesson style, vis low 'dosage' and with a flinty minerality. In addition honey, hazelnuts, blossom and white peach are all evidenced, with the fizz still energetic and the finish strong." (Simon Field-MW-BBR Buyer)
