Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a St-Julien property that today is one of the leading Super Seconds. It is owned by the Borie family and is situated in the south-east of the St-Julien appellation. Ducru-Beaucaillou's 50 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 25%, Cabernet Franc 5% and Petit Verdot 5%) lie on deep, large-stone gravel beds enriched with alluvial soil deposits and with a high clay content. The wines are matured in oak barriques (50-60% new) for 18 months.

For many, Ducru-Beaucaillou is the quintessential St-Julien - deep-coloured, powerful, ripe, exquisitely well-balanced and perfectly harmonious. It requires a minimum of 10 years of bottle ageing before it should be approached and the best vintages will continue improving for many more years. Ducru-Beaucaillou is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé.

This beautifully poised Ducru is as modern and seductively fruity as ever but displays a purer more intellectual edge in 2007 that reveals the estate's enormous potential. Ruthless work in the vineyard was the key to Ducru's success, with extensive green and pink harvesting throughout the year. Made from far more Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) than usual, its enticing nose of black cherries, eucalyptus and mocha is followed by exuberant, fresh, brambly spice, rich raspberries, vanilla and cedar all wrapped in a lovely polished structure. This is a classy, impeccably balanced Ducru well worthy of its glorious heritage. MORE

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Cab.Sauvignon Blend, Ready, but will keep, 12.5% alc.

The deep concentrated fruit is still masked by some very high quality oak. Very subdued this is a brooding wine and one that will require some years before opening out. Just as good as you would expect from this flourishing super-second growth. MORE

Tasting at Ch. Ducru-Beaucaillou is a surreal experience. To say that the Borie family have an unusual taste in modern art is an understatement but once you get past the flamboyant bright orange-yellow décor and copper filigree sliding doors of the tasting ‘tunnel’, the 2008 wine was by far the finest Ducru we had ever tasted. Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Cab.Sauvignon Blend, For laying down, 12.5% alc.

This classic, backward, tannic St.-Julien is made in the style of the 1996 and 1986. The 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou possesses a dense purple color along with a sweet perfume of graphite, black raspberries, cassis, licorice, and subtle toasty oak. Despite their prominent place in the wine’s structure, the sweetness of the tannins and the full-bodied, muscular style suggest exceptional patience will be required. This is a big, substantial, meaty, masculine wine built for considerable longevity.

1996 is possibly the best Cabernet Sauvignon vintage for 50 years, and this classic St. Julien is the best Ducru Beaucaillou since 1982. Exhibiting classic Bordeaux, flavours of cassis, lead pencil, toast and blackcurrant leaves with an elegant floral note, and balanced tannins that will aid a long life. We anticipate it will start drinking in the next couplle of years and last until 2030. MORE

Ch. Ducru-Beaucaillou, St. Julien is gorgeous, with a lovely perfumed floral nose of violets and black fruit supported by a pure, creamy and elegantly structured palate. Classy blackberries and cassis shine through with great precision, alongside minerality and firm tannins. The wines of this estate are renowned for their purity, but in 2005 they have taken on that extra richness that they required to make them truly outstanding. MORE
