Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a St-Julien property that today is one of the leading Super Seconds. It is owned by the Borie family and is situated in the south-east of the St-Julien appellation. Ducru-Beaucaillou's 50 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 25%, Cabernet Franc 5% and Petit Verdot 5%) lie on deep, large-stone gravel beds enriched with alluvial soil deposits and with a high clay content. The wines are matured in oak barriques (50-60% new) for 18 months.

For many, Ducru-Beaucaillou is the quintessential St-Julien - deep-coloured, powerful, ripe, exquisitely well-balanced and perfectly harmonious. It requires a minimum of 10 years of bottle ageing before it should be approached and the best vintages will continue improving for many more years. Ducru-Beaucaillou is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé.

This beautifully poised Ducru is as modern and seductively fruity as ever but displays a purer more intellectual edge in 2007 that reveals the estate's enormous potential. Ruthless work in the vineyard was the key to Ducru's success, with extensive green and pink harvesting throughout the year. Made from far more Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) than usual, its enticing nose of black cherries, eucalyptus and mocha is followed by exuberant, fresh, brambly spice, rich raspberries, vanilla and cedar all wrapped in a lovely polished structure. This is a classy, impeccably balanced Ducru well worthy of its glorious heritage.
Drink: 2015 -2030 .
BBR Score: 17/20.

1996 is possibly the best Cabernet Sauvignon vintage for 50 years, and this classic St. Julien is the best Ducru Beaucaillou since 1982. Exhibiting classic Bordeaux, flavours of cassis, lead pencil, toast and blackcurrant leaves with an elegant floral note, and balanced tannins that will aid a long life. "Floral notes intermixed with rapberries, black currants, minerals and a hint of new oak emerge from the dense purple-colored 2000 Ducru- Beaucaillou. The wine is sweet, dense and medium to full-bodied, with undeniable elegance and finesse as well as a finish that lasts 45+ seconds. A wine of remarkable symmetry, balance, elegance and minerality. It is the Lafite-Rothschild of St. Julien. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+." 94+/100 pts (Robert Parker - Apr-2003)
