Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, a leading Pauillac 2éme Cru Classé estate, is one of Bordeaux's most illustrious ";super seconds";. In 1987 it was bought by the AXA Millésimes Group, who also own Cantenac-Brown, Petit-Village, Suduiraut.

AXA built a state of the art cuverie and chai at Pichon-Longueville Baron and has recently installed Christian Seely as general manager. Pichon-Longueville-Baron's 50-hectare vineyard (Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Merlot 25%) runs adjacent to that of Château Latour and lies on deep gravel beds. Pichon-Longueville Baron's wine is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The Cabernet-dominated Pichon-Longueville Baron is a more muscular, tannic and full-bodied wine than that of its neighbour across the road, Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Recently winemaker Jean-Réné Matignon has astonished even Pichon's most enthusiastic fans with the quality of this wine (and indeed at his other estate Ch. Pibran too). The best examples of Pichon-Longueville Baron have layer upon layer of unctuous, vanilla-scented, blackcurrant and cassis fruit, intermingled with cigar box and lead pencil shavings aromas. They require cellaring for at least 10 years.

"2003 was a heatwave vintage which proved challenging for winemakers. In Bordeaux the most successful villages were St Estèphe and Pauillac. Les Tourelles de Longueville has a higher than usual percentage of Merlot and is very forward, exhibiting juicy, plummy fruit, soft tannins and considerable length on the finish. Second wines of top châteaux like this have come on in leaps and bounds and represent excellent value as sources of affordable good Claret. Try with lamb and hard cheese."  (Alun Griffiths MW - BBR Wine Director)

Tourelles de Longueville (the second wine of Ch. Pichon-Baron) has always been, and always will be, a firm BB&R favourite. Why? Simple - this is the epitomy of good claret at a sensible price. It has pedigree and gravitas but it also has charm and its own identity. The 2004 Tourelles is just coming into its own now - big volumes of cassis fruit are held together by a firm structure that is so well-integrated, it is a joy to behold. There is no doubt that this is a great food wine, but we defy you to buy a case and not end up drinking the odd bottle on its own.

It has pedigree and gravitas but it also has charm and its own identity. There is no better vintage to experience our favourite than the legendary 2005 vintage in which Les Tourelles de Longueville boasts a complexity above its status. Black cherries and mocha hints are abundant, all supported by a structure that will facilitate impressive ageing.

With 50% Merlot in the blend, this second wine from Ch. Pichon-Longueville is more forward than one would expect from a typical Pauillac with its abundant ripe, soft fruit.

When I first tasted Pichon-Baron from barrel, back in 2007, I thought it was undoubtedly a big and well-made wine, yet it had a slightly green edge to it.  My caution was unfounded: the edges have now softened and it has evolved as a powerful and concentrated wine with a balanced, rich core of classic Pauillac fruit. This is proving as a very complete, well-rounded 2006.

Pichon-Baron's beaming winemaker Jean-Réné Matignon has once again made a sleek, sexy and hedonistic wine in 2005. With an intoxicating perfumed nose and a powerful, velvety palate of black cherries this ripe, polished, minerally wine is pure Pauillac. The 64% Cabernet Sauvignon is unsurprisingly to the fore, with the small berries bestowing great concentration and beautiful pure fruit on this wine. This is another fine performance set to confirm Pichon-Baron's position at the top of Bordeaux's echelon.
