Pauillac

See Pauillac producers See a list of Pauillac wines

Pauillac is the aristocrat of the Médoc boasting 75% of the Médoc's first growths and with grand cru classés representing 84% of Pauillac's production

For a small town, surrounded by so many familiar and regal names, Pauillac imparts a slightly seedy impression.  There are no grand hotels or restaurants, with the honourable exception of the establishments owned by Jean-Michel Cazes, there is a small port and yacht harbour and a dominant petrochemical plant.

But outside the town, there is arguably the greatest concentration of fabulous vineyards throughout all Bordeaux, including three of the five First Growths.  Bordering St Estèphe to the north and St Julien to the south, Pauillac has fine, deep gravel soils with important iron and marl deposits, and a subtle, softly rolling landscape, cut by a series of small streams running to the Gironde. The vineyards are located on two gravel-rich plateaux, one to the northwest of the town of Pauillac and the other to the southest, with the vines reaching a greater depth than found anywhere else in the Médoc.

Pauillac's first growths each have their own unique characteristics; Lafite Rothschild, tucked in the northern part of Pauillac on the St Estèphe border, produces Pauillac's most aromatically complex and subtly-flavoured wine. Mouton Rothschild's vineyards lie on a on a well-drained gravel ridge and with its high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon can produce (in its best years) Pauillac's most decadently rich, fleshy and exotic wine.

Latour, arguably Bordeaux's most consistent first growth, is located  in southern Pauillac next to St Julien. Its soil is gravel rich with superb drainage and Latour's vines penetrate as far as 5 metres into the soil. It produces arguably the most long-lived wines of the Médoc.

Named after a `bataille' that was fought here between the French and English (who else) 600 years ago, Batailley has once again lived up to its reputation of offering good value, early drinking, quintessential Pauillac. Made from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, its toasty, ripe plum and cedar nose leads on to a palate with vivid cassis and raspberry fruit, creamy vanilla oak and a lovely long finish. Tried, trusted and adored, Batailley has produced another sterling effort in 2007.

Run by the delightful livewire that is Claire Villars, this underrated estate continues its climb up the Pauillac hit parade in 2007. With a hefty 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and only 10% Merlot, this is gorgeously feminine, almost Margaux-esque. Its pure, cassis nose, and elegant blackberry, chocolate and cedar flavours are supported by attractive but firm tannins. Well-integrated, pretty, refined and approachable, this is as full of personality as Claire's bright orange winery (her favourite colour). With refreshing honesty, she compares this to her 1999 although we think it is rather better than that. A delightful 2007 Pauillac.

"D'Armailhac and its stablemate Clerc Milon, along of course with mighty Mouton itself, have each improved in their own ways in recent years. The wine has become more rounded, with sweet cassis fruit and medium-weight tannins that should see this drinking sooner than some but lasting as long, if needed, as many. Drink 2012-2018."

Alfred Tesseron is currently producing astonishing wines that are easily of Super-Second Growth quality. This is one of the great wines of 2006. The work he has done in the vineyards, using organic and in some cases biodynamic methods, has clearly paid off in this tricky year. The wine has a spicy, brambly fruit nose followed by a tight-knit palate packed full of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit with cedar and coffee hints. The wine's focus, purity and minerality acts as a perfect counterpoint to its harmonious richness. This is an utterly complete wine, and a must-buy. Drink: 2016-2030.

Sandwiched happily between First Growths, Lafite and Mouton, this is Ch. d'Armailhac's more structured, serious big brother. We actually had trouble splitting them in 2007, although for us Clerc Milon still shades it, with its rich, brooding kirsch nose and weighty, fresh, dark damson and spice palate. It has excellent generosity for any vintage, let alone 2007, with dense yet ripe tannins and good grip. With 42% Merlot in the blend, this is one of the few really good Left Bank wines using such a high proportion of that variety. Impressive, traditional Pauillac in the best sense of the word.

From the same family of estates as Lafite, l'Evangile and Rieussec, Ch. Duhart-Milon very much retains its own personality even if you can always detect some of Lafite's refined elegance in its wines. Managed by the legendary Charles Chevallier (who sounds like he should be in the music halls rather than the vineyards), Duhart has improved markedly in recent years following the replanting and renovation of its vineyards and winery. It has produced a full-bodied 2007, which not many can say, with a voluptuous attack of black fruit, classic Pauillac notes of cedar and tobacco, and a long cassis finish.

This is a step up in quality from its sister estate, Ch. d'Armailhac, with all the same energy and generous expressive fruit, but more depth and complexity. Located next to both Lafite and Mouton, there is some nice Pauillac grip here with substantial but well-integrated tannins. A serious nose of tobacco and licorice leads onto a smooth, fleshy palate full of creamy blackcurrant and raspberries and a lovely long harmonious finish. This is very close to the 2005 in quality. "2003 was a heatwave vintage which proved challenging for winemakers. In Bordeaux the most successful villages were St Estèphe and Pauillac. Les Tourelles de Longueville has a higher than usual percentage of Merlot and is very forward, exhibiting juicy, plummy fruit, soft tannins and considerable length on the finish. Second wines of top châteaux like this have come on in leaps and bounds and represent excellent value as sources of affordable good Claret. Try with lamb and hard cheese."  (Alun Griffiths MW - BBR Wine Director)

Tourelles de Longueville (the second wine of Ch. Pichon-Baron) has always been, and always will be, a firm BB&R favourite. Why? Simple - this is the epitomy of good claret at a sensible price. It has pedigree and gravitas but it also has charm and its own identity. The 2004 Tourelles is just coming into its own now - big volumes of cassis fruit are held together by a firm structure that is so well-integrated, it is a joy to behold. There is no doubt that this is a great food wine, but we defy you to buy a case and not end up drinking the odd bottle on its own.

"A 5th Classified Growth from Pauillac, for years considered a good value, reliable claret but in recent years elevated to new heights of finesse under the watchful stewardship of its owners, the Castéjà family. A bouquet of cassis, tobacco leaf and cedarwood gives way to a mature, soft fruit flavour on the palate. 2001 was a fine, elegant vintage with very precise definition, and all its component parts in excellent harmony."
