Château Pontet-Canet

Château Pontet-Canet is a large Pauillac estate that can trace its origins back to 1725, when Jean-François Pontet gave his name to the estate he had acquired. The wine was not château-bottled until 1972 and in 1975 the property was sold to Guy Tesseron, who also owns Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estephe. Today it is owned and run by Alfred and Michel Tesseron.

Pontet-Canet's 78 hectares of vineyards adjoin those of Mouton Rothschild and are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (32%) and Cabernet Franc (5%).

The Tesserons have vastly improved the quality of the Pontet-Canet wines which are now full-bodied and packed with ripe, chewy, black fruits and finely integrated tannins. The wines posseses marvellous ageing potential.

Pontet-Canet is classified as a 5ème Cru Classé.

Alfred Tesseron is currently producing astonishing wines that are easily of Super-Second Growth quality. This is one of the great wines of 2006. The work he has done in the vineyards, using organic and in some cases biodynamic methods, has clearly paid off in this tricky year. The wine has a spicy, brambly fruit nose followed by a tight-knit palate packed full of blackcurrant and raspberry fruit with cedar and coffee hints. The wine's focus, purity and minerality acts as a perfect counterpoint to its harmonious richness. This is an utterly complete wine, and a must-buy. Drink: 2016-2030.

It is a heresy severe enough to get you excommunicated, but in our view Pontet-Canet is as good as the First Growths in 2007. Working the vineyards according to organic and even biodynamic principles, dryly humorous owner Alfred Tesseron has produced a 2007 with a lovely pure black fruit nose, ripe but present tannins, a mouth-watering finish and arguably the finest quality fruit in the vintage: silky, luscious, blackberries and plums with oodles of minerals, coffee, cedar and tobacco. Since the outstanding 2004, Pontet-Canet has been a must-have wine every year; in 2007 this is truer than ever.

Our favourite Pontet-Canet and even a challenge to Ch. Mouton-Rothschild's First Growth crown. Intense, multi-layered and masculine with a wonderful balance of acidity, ripe tannin and cool, rich fruits. A star wine of the vintage and a star buy.

"The earlier maturing 2001 provides the opportunity to get a glimpse of what lies in store for the 2004 and 2005. This is a seductively pretty vintage, although not as profound as 2000, but still capturing the aura of a great Pontet, albeit in microcosm. Unquestionably one for my Christmas lunch please, Santa!"

"One of the great successes of the vintage and certainly one of the most profound Pontet-Canets made over the last decade is the 2003. Deep purple to the rim with a glorious nose of scorched earth, black currant jam, smoke, licorice, and roasted meats, it is full-bodied, incredibly powerful, dense, with low acidity but high tannin, broad-shouldered, and savory. This is a stunning, pure, classic Pontet-Canet that should be at its best between 2010 and 2035. Drink 2010-2035. 95/100 points. (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Apr-2006)

"Concentrated, powerful" (Wines of the Year - Decanter Award 5/5 Stars- Decanter Nov 08)

Owner Alfred Tesseron has produced an utterly extraordinary wine in 2005. The verdict was unanimous amongst our buying team: it was without question the best Pontet-Canet anyone could ever remember tasting. With incredible silky tannins, and perfect balance, this has everything you could ever want from a wine. Creamy blackberries, and an incredibly precise shape, lead to a spellbounding finish that makes your tongue tingle. Tasting this wine is one of those experiences where you wonder how a few grapes can be transformed into such an elixir. Unmissable.
