Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most renowned properties in the Médoc. Owned by Baron Eric de Rothschild and Located in the north of the Pauillac appellation, Lafite Rothschild is also one of the largest Médoc estates. It has 95 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (10%).

Lafite Rothschild's vineyards lie on deep gravel beds (up to 5 metres thick) over marl and limestone. Annual production tops 35,000 cases, although a third of this consists of the second wine called Carruades de Lafite.

Of all the Médoc Grand Crus, Lafite Rothschild can be the most beguiling and difficult to understand. It is never the most powerful, yet, along with Margaux, possesses the most exquisite bouquet of any Médoc wine. It has the elegance, balance and harmony that epitomises claret at its very best.

One of the things that makes Ch. Lafite-Rothschild so wonderful is its aethereal, silky finesse and, as this 2007 clearly shows, its famous second wine Carruades de Lafite has this in spades. Soft and approachable yet gracefully austere, floral and refined, the 2007 Carruades has delicate raspberry and plum fruit and finely textured tannins. If you are looking for a monster wine in 2007 then you should probably head elsewhere, but if elegance and balance is your thing then you should definitely snap up a case of this attractive mini-Lafite tout de suite.

This is an extremely Grand Vin for a second wine. A beguiling perfumed nose seems to offer almost tropical hints to the main fruity, floral and cedar aromas. Carruades is normally a bit harder to get into but when you taste it you feel you want to take this home and drink it straightaway; on your own. There is concentrated red fruit on the palate, that is silky, elegant and complex, all buttressed very nicely by a slab of fresh acidity and very fine tannins. Tasted blind you would easily take this for a 2nd or 3rd growth. Drink 2013-2030.

As usual Lafite's immensely classy 'second wine' is better than many of the other classed growths' 'first wines'. Made from 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot, this is well-rounded and seductive with fresh, perfumed, lively red fruit and supple tannins. Drink 2007-2011.

From a legendary vintage for Château Lafite, this is probably the finest 2nd wine of all. With only 38% of the 1996 crop at Lafite going into the Grand Vin, this Carruades is a truly exceptional wine with many of the qualities of its elder sibling, and equivalent in quality to a 2nd or 3rd growth. Fantastic value. Drink 2004-2020.

Only 39% of production was used for the Grand Vin and with a whopping 90.5% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend the 2004 Lafite needs little introduction. This wine has one of the most exciting noses - intense, spicy, pure cassis and a generous helping of creamy vanilla. The palate is just as exciting, exhibiting terrific concentration and a hint of warm new oak which leads to an intense, linear core of lively blackcurrants and layers of intriguing minerality. The Cabernet was very evident on the finish with the variety's characteristically firm tannins taking over at the end, making this one for the long-term.

No wine in Bordeaux is more silky and gorgeously textured than Ch. Lafite. Happily, their 2007 continues the trend. A rich, fine, dark fruit compote nose leads to a wonderfully fresh, refined palate with delicate yet intense cassis, plum and cedar-box flavours caressing the tastebuds on their way to an exquisite finish. Lafite have not tried to produce a blockbuster in 2007 but have worked in perfect harmony with the vintage. Using low yields and allowing only 38% of the crop into the Grand Vin, they have wholeheartedly succeeded in producing a beautifully classic 2007 Lafite.

There are few, if any, more beautiful wines in Bordeaux than Ch. Lafite. The ethereal finesse, the lacy tannins, the intense, pure fruit and feminine delicacy; they are all there in this lovely wine. It is beautifully silky with coffee, spice and cedar notes, and a long seductive finish. Elegant, seductive and multi-dimensional it has the firm tannins typical of the vintage and a lovely harmony. With only 40% of the crop going into the Grand Vin, General Manager Charles Chevalier has done what he has to maintain the exceptional Lafite quality in 2006. Drink: 2020-2040.

" A spectacular value as well as a sleeper of the vintage is the 135,000-bottle cuvee of 2003 Carruades de Lafite (50% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc). This amazing effort rivals such superb second wines as the 1989 Bahans-Haut-Brion and 1982 Forts de Latour. A serious red, it is sexy, opulent, rich, and luscious with silky tannin, enormous body, and wave after wave of mocha-infused black cherry and cassis fruit. It is almost too good to be believed. While drinkable now, it should evolve for 12-15 years or longer. "

Only 41% of Lafite’s production made its way into the grand vin in 2002 such is the commitment to quality here. This has an obviously classy perfumed nose with a fresh and appealing purity. This is replicated on the serious palate with its lashings of ripe strawberry and black cherry fruit, new oak and firm tannins. From a relatively restrained start the wine develops beautifully in the mouth, with smoky dark fruit and tobacco hints leading to a firm, long finish. This is a strong candidate for ‘wine of the vintage’ in 2002.
