The enigmatic Philippe Blanc, director of Ch. Beychevelle, was in fine humour
when we visited him to taste his 2008 Grand Vin. This estate just gets better
and better and Philippe’s sunny disposition was a reflection of the
bright fruit shining out of his wine. The round, plump, fleshy feel of 47%
Merlot certainly comes across with opulent notes of ripe morello cherries but
48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc add to its darker side and provide
an elegant backbone. This is well balanced and rewarding: a fine achievement.

For so long I have considered Beychevelle to be a tried and tested, does what
it says on the tin, kind of a Claret. Maybe even, good but a touch boring! Over
the last few years this couldn't be further from the truth and the 2007 is
undoubtedly one of the wines of the commune. A quintessential St Julien that
offers a fantastic crunchy freshness to the fruit that is so characteristic of
the vintage. This wine represents great value, and now I can honestly say
Beychevelle is an exciting wine to look out for!

Best Beychevelle any of us at Berrys has ever tasted. This has a vivid and
attractive nose of raspberries and apples, and what it loses in power, compared
to some of the 2005s we have tasted, it gains in finesse. A silky texture and
fresh creamy red fruit flavours provide a crisp, concentrated wine. The blend
is made up of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot, which is unusually high
Merlot for the region. The 2004 is glorious now but showed poorly last year, so
maybe the 2005 will be even better a year down the line. And let's be honest,
it's so good now it is a risk well worth taking.

The quintessentially elegant yet powerful 2005 may be the finest Beychevelle
made since 1982. Its opaque ruby/purple color and sweet nose of camphor,
blueberries, black currants, flowers, and crushed rocks precede a lovely,
sweet, rich wine with zesty acidity delineating its medium to full-bodied
personality, laser-like precision, and impressive purity and length. While this
estate often does not live up to its pedigree, the 2005 is the real deal.
Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025+.
BBR Score: 16.5/20. Parker: 90-93/100.
