Chateau Angelus

Château Angelus is one of the largest and most prestigious St-Emilion estates and was promoted to 1er grand cru classé status in the 1996 St-Emilion reclassification. Passionately managed for over four generations, Angelus is owned and run by two cousins, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, and Jean-Bernard Grenie and is located in the centre-west of the St-Emilion appellation, due west of St-Emilion town.

Angelus's vineyards, 57.8 acres, situated less than a kilometer away from the famous St Emilion steeple, enjoys a perfect southerly-exposed slope - Cabernet Franc (which makes up 48% of the blend) is grown at the bottom of the slope, where the soil is sandier and warmer, while the Merlot (50% of the blend) is grown in the limestone-rich clay soils at the top of the slope. The wine is matured in 100% new oak for 18 months. Rich, concentrated and complex, Angelus needs at least five years of bottle age before it should be approached.

This is one of the few really sexy wines from 2006. It is a real fruit bomb, with an intense, spicy, minty nose and a rich decadence from beginning to end. It is packed full of tarry black cherry and blackberry fruit, with cream, coffee and dark chocolate notes. The posters at the château proudly inform you that Angélus is 'Le Choix de James Bond' in reference to its appearance in 'Casino Royale'. You could certainly do a lot worse than follow Mr Bond's lead by picking up a case of this gorgeous 2006. Drink: 2015-2040.

"..This broad, sweet 2003's supple attack is followed by a tannic mid-section. The wine does not appear to be as dense or structured as the 2004. Given the high percentage of Cabernet Franc, it is likely to put on considerable weight in the bottle. This beauty is slightly different not only because of the torrid vintage conditions, but also because it incorporates the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever utilized at Angelus. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2023." 93/100 points. (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - April-2006)

This is truly stunning and deliciously decadent. It has the amazing ability to be incredibly intense and concentrated yet to still to have freshness, poise and elegance. The St Emilion classification may currently be suspended but it is safe to say that this 2005 is of First Growth quality (and at a third of the price). Outstanding.

Deep, dark, colour. Lovely complex nose of dark fruits leading on to a sumptuously rich and harmonious palate displaying great depth and power. Drinking superbly now but will keep for many years to come.
