Finca Allende

Finca Allende, the estate created by Brother and sister team Mercedes and Miguel Angel de Gregorio, is located in the hill town of Briones in the Rioja Alta. 'Allende' can be roughly translated as 'further'; its philosophy is to go further and further towards creating the perfect Rioja. This has been done by marrying the old and the new, by embracing the traditional grape varieties but then treating them to new French oak. A further distinguishing characteristic, apart from their ripeness and structure, is that Allende's best wines are vineyard-based, with focus on the expression of Rioja's varied terroir.

Finca Allende's production comes from their own 22 hectares supplemented by contracts with certain other growers in Briones. The principal cuvée is 100% Tempranillo aged for thirteen months in predominantly French oak. The oldest vines (Tempranillo with some Graciano) are kept back to make Aurus.

The full potential of the estate is eloquently illustrated by Calvario, a single-vineyard wine from 60 year-old Tempranillo vines with magnificent aromatics and lush fruit, that clearly underlines the family's qualitative aspirations.

Having achieved world renown for his superlative Riojas, Miguel Angel di Gregorio has set him-self a fairly difficult task; namely to produce a wine of distinction from Spain’s brutal central plain, the Meseta. Its climate extremes are enough to infuriate even the the most quixotic of wine-makers; Miguel’s answer has been to add 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah to the Tempranilo, to completely destalk the grapes and to treat them to 14 months of partially new Allier oak. The result is out-standing, the tannins evidenced but not austere, the fruit ripe but not dessicated, the complexity in the mouth a wonder to behold. (Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer) MORE

"For the ebullient Miguel Angel Gregorio, who revived this fine old estate in Briones (La Rioja Alta), his Finca Allende Rioja is one most complete expression of Tempranillo. This is evidenced by a generous ruby colour and a nose of spice, damson, forest floor and violets. The palate is marked out by both the generosity of ripe red and black fruit and the quality of the tannins, which are very finely grained. As always a fine match for chorizo or lamb shanks." "Very rich and complex on the nose, Spicy and full and rich with real depths of tobacco leaf flavour. Very well done. The oak management is superb. It is expensive, but it is an extremely fine wine"
(Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com - Nov 08)

Allende's flagship winery from a 1.5 hectare vineyard founded in 1945 and situated in La Rioja Alta. The age of the vines, allied to the indulgence of the elevage have resulted in a Rioja which marries fruit and minerality, and dresses them in ripe and silky tannins. A beautifully textured wine that should last for ten years or more.

Medium-Full Bodied, Dry, Red, Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, For laying down, 13% alc.

Miguel Angel Gregorio's particular vision of Calvary dates from 1945 and is a clay/chalk vineyard of no apparent distinction. With Tempranillo vines dating from this seemingly magical year (not just Peace in Europe but also the birth date of Artadi's El Pison vineyard) and an ambitious elevage that involves over 20 months in 200% new French oak, there is an apparent risk of over-indulgence. This does not appear to be the case when tasting the wine; the oak is already wonderfully integrated, the tannins very fine with layers of fruit, spice and minerals etched with lapidary care.

Medium Bodied, Dry, Red, Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, Ready, but will improve, 13% alc.

A perfect ambassador for new-wave Rioja from a memorable recent vintage. There are truffles and wild herbs on the nose and a full, richly textured palate with excellent length. A wine for keeping.

"Price aside, there is no question that the 2001 Aurus, an 85% Tempranillo/15% Graciano blend, is a profound offering. It possesses a fabulously complex nose of black fruits intermixed with truffles, licorice, smoky oak, and flowers. Voluptuously-textured with super concentration, and a finish that lasts nearly a minute, this monumental Rioja should drink well young, yet last for 15 years." 95/100 pts (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - June 2005) MORE

Medium Bodied, Dry, Red, Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, For laying down, 13% alc.

Miguel Angel's two favourite wines, from outside Spain, needless to say, are Bordeaux and Burgundy. His homage to the latter is the Calvario, to the former is the Aurus. Beyond the tell-tale bottle shapes, the differences are subtle and intriguing; the Aurus 2005 is made from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano and was aged for no fewer than 25 months in 100% new French oak. The result, especially given the warm vintage, is a incredibly powerful wine; rich and creamy, with black cherries, damson and liqueur.... a brooding beast, bristling with cellar potential and the will to live for a very long time.
