Description

Good things, they say, come in small packages; this is certainly the case at Ch. Feyit Clinet, the maker of our label Pomerol. This is a tiny property on the edge of the village which quietly goes about its business of making sumptuous wines which remain under the radar of the "label hunter". A welcoming nose of raspberry jam with mocha undertones is followed by a mouthful of plump, Merlot-based fruit on the palate. This is ready to drink now, but can be stored for a year or so to beneficial effect.
Mark Pardoe MW, Wine Buying Director

Specially selected for Berrys by Jeremy Chasseuil, from Château Feytit-Clinet, this wine’s distinguished origins are clearly evident. Merlot dominates the blend and bestows supple plum and blackberry fruit along with nuances of spiced chocolate to this rich, velvet-textured Claret.  Immediately appealing, this versatile wine is excellent with an array of meat dishes, from chargrilled to roasted lamb and beef, as well as duck and porcini.

About this WINE

Chateau Feytit-Clinet

Chateau Feytit-Clinet

Situated on the western part of the plateau in the Pomerol wine appellation in Bordeaux, Château Feytit-Clinet belonged to the  stable of Moueix family wines until 1999.

Jeremy Chasseuil arrived at Château Feytit-Clinet in time for the stunning 2000 vintage. Previously a wine-maker at Château La Dominique, his efforts since have resulted in some very impressive wines.

Soils here are rich in clay which favours the Merlot grape rather than the Cabernets, and Jeremy has exploited them perfectly to produce succulent wines, never over-extracted, and full of charm and distinction.

Merlot

Merlot

The most widely planted grape in Bordeaux and a grape that has been on a relentless expansion drive throughout the world in the last decade. Merlot is adaptable to most soils and is relatively simple to cultivate. It is a vigorous naturally high yielding grape that requires savage pruning - over-cropped Merlot-based wines are dilute and bland. It is also vital to pick at optimum ripeness as Merlot can quickly lose its varietal characteristics if harvested overripe.

In St.Emilion and Pomerol it withstands the moist clay rich soils far better than Cabernet grapes, and at it best produces opulently rich, plummy clarets with succulent fruitcake-like nuances. Le Pin, Pétrus and Clinet are examples of hedonistically rich Merlot wines at their very best. It also plays a key supporting role in filling out the middle palate of the Cabernet-dominated wines of the Médoc and Graves.

Merlot is now grown in virtually all wine growing countries and is particularly successful in California, Chile and Northern Italy.
