Description

Turkey Flat Vineyards is a wine estate located in the Barossa Valley in Australia. It was here, on the banks of Tanunda Creek where bush turkeys once roamed, that pioneer Silesian settler Johann Friedrich August Fiedler planted his first vines in 1847. Shiraz is still produced from these vines planted in 1847 – some of the oldest in the world. But the estate now also has vines at Bethany, Koonunga Hill and Stonewell, producing generous, warm, friendly reds and this full, fresh white blended from three Rhône varieties.

The vineyards are now managed by Peter, a fourth generation Schulz, and his wife, Christie, who have made the transition from grape growing to winemaking, and also transformed the historic bluestone butchers shop into the cellar door and at the heart of their Turkey Flat wine business.  Produced from fruit grown in their Stonewell and Bethany vineyards, this is textural wine, with flavours of pear and green apple, enhanced from partial barrel fermentation in French oak hogsheads. Extended lees contact has further contributed to the mouth-feel and structure of this wine.

Critics reviews

Wine-Pages90/100
Fragrant nose, some smoky, mineral, quite flinty notes and a bold lemon fruit beneath. The palate is sharply focused and fruity, with masses of peach and orange brightness and lovely freshness, just hinting at herbs and that stony, smoky mineral character.

About this WINE

Turkey Flat Vineyards

Turkey Flat Vineyards

Turkey Flat Vineyards is a wine estate located in Barossa Valley in Australia. It was here, on the banks of Tanunda Creek where bush turkeys once roamed, that pioneer Silesian settler Johann Friedrich August Fiedler planted the first vines in 1847.

The vineyard was purchased by the Schulz family in 1860 and is still owned by the family today. It yields very small quantities of intense, concentrated Shiraz and is the cornerstone of Turkey Flat vineyards.

The eclectic range of wines – including a rare unblended Mourvèdre, Pedro Ximénez fortified wine, and an ‘air-dried’ Marsanne (The Last Straw) - are produced in very small quantities. The reds are made using only French oak and are made in an elegant and restrained style.

Turkey Flat Rosé is widely touted as Australia’s best and is widely lauded by wine critics. This rosé is one of the only Rosé producers to own dedicated Rosé vineyards.
