Johannes Selbach has responded to our request for an upgraded Kabinett style of Riesling with typical aplomb and generosity. A Mosel archetype, this wine celebrates an harmonious alliance between pure lime and peach fruit, gentle minerality and modest alcohol, all gracefully textured. Its elegant fabric is underpinned by classic freshness and wonderful natural sweetness.

Drink: 2008 -2010 .

A very successful Sonnenuhr form Johannes Selbach. Fresh apples, lemon grass and a gentle hint of honey; the sugar nicely integrated, the finish refreshing with the relative power for which this steep vineyard is known, clearly and pleasingly evidenced.

Attractive notes of lime and kerosene ( admittedly doesn't sound very attractive) then a palate dominated by pear skin, peach-kernels and elderflower, the sweetness lending a spicy and tropical note and an almost lychee profile. Kinheimer's steep slopes are made up of blue Devonian slate in the vein of Erden, giving the wines an extra dimension of richness which is not evidenced in Urzig, where the slate is red.

Kabinett is a relativley rare beast these days in the Mosel, such ha e been the changes in temperature of late. Johannes only makes a Kabinett that, for him, tastes like a Kabinett, in other words a beautifully pure and delicate wine with perfectly balanced sweetness. Here is such a wine.

The finely nuanced Schieferterassen, farmed on eponymous and photographically precipitous slate in the famous Winningen commune, has a deep colour, a nose of grapefruit, fennel and spice and a broad but racy palate, and is utterly delicious.

Top-notch Riesling from a serious producer. 2006 Riesling Kabinett Zeltinger Schlossberg is aromatic, with searing minerality and hints of cinnamon and rose-petals. On the palate, it offers intense, multi-layered citrus fruit and flint flavours, that coat the mouth. Selbach's wines are typically crafted for the long-term and show substantial improvement after a few years of bottle maturation.
