The most powerful red wines of the Côte de Beaune comes from Pommard, where complex soils with a high proportion of iron-rich clay produce deep coloured, relatively tannic wines. A Pommard that is ready to drink in its first few years is probably not going to be a great example of the appellation.

Two vineyards stand out: the lower part of Les Rugiens, which has been mooted for promotion to grand cru, and the 5 hectare walled Clos des Epéneaux, monopoly of Comte Armand.

  • 125 hectares of premier cru vineyards (28 in all). Best vineyards include Les Rugiens, Les Epénots (including Clos des Epéneaux) and Pézérolles .

Petits Noizons is one of the best sites for village Pommard – this is a rich, full bodied wine with generous fruit, well integrated tannins and excellent length.

Petits Noizons is exceptionally well situated on a south-east facing hillside above Pommard. The colour is impressively full, with rich plummy fruit on the nose. This is surprisingly graceful for Pommard with a very long finish.

Made from Clos des Épeneaux vines planted in the 1980s, this is beautifully perfumed with very pretty fruit coming to the fore. Still tight on the palate for the moment, this needs another 3 years before it will deliver its energetic potential.

This has a beautifully enticing mix of strawberry and raspberry notes along with a touch of violets and similar succulent red fruit on the palate. Exceptionally stylish for Pommard, this is a great result for the domaine.

This is made from the ‘young’ vines of the Clos des Épeneaux but ‘young’ here means nearly 25-years-old. It is a relatively fruity, forward style of Pommard but still has a lovely sense of place and fine definition.

This superb vineyard should make one of the most stylish wines of Pommard, and Benjamin has yet again achieved this in 2008. An entirely red fruit wine, this is seamlessly put together with just a touch of spice and perfectly balanced acidity.
