Chambolle produces the most elegant wines in the Côte de Nuits, having more active chalk and less clay in the soil than the other villages. The wines may be a little lighter in colour and less tannic than Gevrey-Chambertin but they have a sublime concentration of fruit. Village Chambolle Musigny usually provides excellent value.

Le Musigny is one of the top half dozen vineyards in Burgundy, producing wines of extraordinary intensity and yet with a magical velvety character. Les Amoureuses is immediately appealing, a wonderfully sensual wine which deserves grand cru status. Bonnes Mares tends to have a firmer structure and ages very well.

  • 94 hectares of village Chambolle Musigny.
  • 61 hectares of premier cru vineyards (24 in all). Best vineyards include Les Amoureuses, Les Charmes, Les Fuées, Les Baudes and Sentiers.
  • 24 hectares of grand cru vineyard - Bonnes Mares and Le Musigny.
  • Recommended Producers:  de Vogüé, Mugnier, Roumier, Barthod.

Displaying a rich, deep, full purple colour, a hugely seductive burst of ripe fruit covers the palate so that the oak does not show. This wine is succulent from start to finish – another superb Les Cras from Patrice. Drink 2008 to 2012.

Patrice felt that this cuvée deserved only new barrels, which blend in harmoniously with the appealing soft red fruit typical of `Les Charmes'. A long, graceful finish to this deceptively powerful wine.

Fine and rich purple in colour, this is a ripe but elegant wine. It has greater sensuality than the Les Cras (which follows) and is rounder and even more succulent. Fully-ripe fruit with a few blackberries lurking which enrich the summer pudding palate. Drink 2008 to 2012.

Nobody else in Burgundy has been so meticulous in sorting out grapes in 2004 vintage like Rion. This is one reason, along with the low yields, why the Rions' 2004 are so impressive. Clos des Argillières is a broad shouldered, energetic, classically plum pudding Nuits-St Georges from the vineyard overlooking Patrice’s house. It is very full-bodied though perfectly structured and requires six to eight years for optimum drinking.
