Sauternes is where arguably the word's finest sweet white wines are produced. The Sauternes appellation actually consists of 5 communes; Barsac, Preignac, Bommes, Fargues and Sauternes itself. Barsac is also an appellation in its own right.

Sauternes literally has an atmosphere different from any of the other major communes. At the southern tip of the Graves, close to the Garonne, not only is the land hillier and decidedly more bucolic, but it also enjoys a specific mesoclimate of evening autumn mists which linger until well into the following day unless burnt off by warm sunshine.

The mists are caused by the cool spring-fed waters of the Ciron River meeting the warmer tidal Garonne and the result is an ideal environment for the growth of the mould botrytis cinerea. When its arrival is felicitous, it feeds on the water in the ripe grapes, dehydrating them and leaving sweet, shriveled fruit.

Other regions in Bordeaux (like Cadillac, Loupiac) produce wines in a similar style from the same method, but none achieve the profundity and complexity of Sauternes.

	Medium Bodied, Sweet, White, Sauv.Blanc & Sémillon, Drink now, Cork Closure, 12% alc. 2004 was a difficult vintage, but after four journeys through the vines to pick nobly rotten grapes, Château Suduiraut, responsible for this Berry's bottling, was done. It's one of the smallest sauternes crops ever, but given that halves of 2004 Suduiraut cost £30-plus, this lesser label with some of the grand vin's intense, waxy, peach and marzipan fruit is a delight. Only a couple of sweet wines really stood out from our tastings in 2008 and Ch. Guiraud was one of them. Lovely, orange botrytis notes abound on a silky, mouthcoating, honeyed palate. Lighter in style than some Sauternes powerhouses, this has a delicate, fresh apricot fruit style which adds delightful finesse and charm. It is however the delightfully refreshing acidity that really made it shine. Quite delicious, this promises enjoyment over many years to come. MORE Drink: 2011 -2035 . BBR Score: 16/20. Its 2005 demonstrates the stylishness of the vintage with its finely perfumed nose, while the palate combines elegance with an undeniable weight of exotic tropical citrus and white peach fruit. D'Yquem still seems to be head and shoulders above everyone else in Sauternes but Rieussec is part of the select group - made up of Climens and Suduiraut - chasing for the second spot. This is better than 2003 but a little bit behind 2001 in terms of gravitas and zingy acidity. It is nonetheless a cracking wine with immense class, intensity and elegance plus firm acidity that provides a backbone for the rich fruit. Made from 91% Semillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle, it combines purity with great balance., while very pure, rich apricots with hints of fruit peel abound. Drink 2010-2030. This rightly popular wine from the owners of First Growth Lafite-Rothschild is as engaging and sumptuous as ever in 2007. The soft, dense, rich texture is classic Rieussec while the level of sweetness is more balanced than in some previous vintages. A rich, precise, apricot tart nose is followed by an incredibly concentrated, succulent, creamy palate with apple, caramel and overripe peach, relatively low acidity and a long, intense finish. This hedonistic Rieussec may be a smidgen behind their 2005 and 2001 in quality but it is nevertheless an immensely impressive effort. MORE Drink: 2012 -2027 . BBR Score: 17.5/20.
